“What’s on Your Calendar?” by Linda Martin Andersen
On the first day of the month (yes, I’m late), I post about special calendar dates you may want to celebrate. This summer, I didn’t get to take a vacation; so I decided to take one in my mind–a trip down Memory Lane to recall earlier vacations. I thought I’d share a few things I have posted on my calendar for this month and ask you about special celebrations you have planned. Here’s my list:
Special Things I’ll Do This Month:
- Visit the Duke Chapel in Durham, NC (date to be determined)
- Eat fresh vegetables and fruits
- Be a daily caregiver
- Prepare a query to send two agents for a picture book manuscript
- Recall memories of favorite vacations I’ve taken–a road trip across the US as a child and later as an adult. I’ve also been to the mountains, to the beach, to Disney World, amusement parks, and to Canada. I will recall who was on the trip, my favorites memories including funny ones, disappointing ones, and others that stand out. Maybe I’ll visit a different place each day. Sounds like fun. Maybe you’d like to try it too.
Special Days on My Calendar in August
- August 4–Daughter-in-law’s birthday
- August 17–older son’s birthday
- Any day a friend calls, emails, or comes to visit
- August 26–the day our grandsons return to school
- Attend doctor appointments with my husband
What’s on Your Calendar for August? I hope you’ll share about it here. Special days you may want to consider celebrating:
Special Weeks–
International Tree Climbing Days: 1-5 (I bet this brings back memories)
National Farmers’ Market Week: 3-9 (Have you ever grown a garden? Tell about it. Try something new. Consider a fruit or vegetable you’ve never tasted.)
Special Days–
Smithsonian Day: 10 (Have you been? What was a favorite display?)
Tug-of-War Day: 27 (When was the last time you played? Do you remember a movie or television show showing a tug-of-war scene?)
National Toasted Marshmallow Day: 30 (Where did you have your last toasted marshmallow?)
Month–
- Get Ready for Kindergarten Month (Do you know a child entering kindergarten? What do you remember from kindergarten?)
What if your teacher asks you about what you did this summer and you want to tell about a vacation trip, but you didn’t get to take one. Consider telling about a vacation trip you recall from an earlier year.
